2008 ALABAMA DANCE FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

 
The Alabama Dance Festival launches its second decade in 2008 by celebrating the theme Crossing Boundaries. Whether you are a beginning dancer or a seasoned professional or an enthusiastic audience member – there are new opportunities for everyone! Components of the Festival include public performances, community dance classes, pre-professional dance classes for ages 11 and up, and professional artist workshops for ages 18 and up.
 
 

FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES AND TICKETS

 

The guest resident company for the Alabama Dance Festival is Bridgman Packer Dance, co-presented by the Alabama Dance Council and the Alys Stephens Center. Performances are on January 17, 18, and 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sirote Theatre. Tickets are $45, $35, $25, or $10 for students, and can be purchased through the Alys Stephens Center Box Office at 205-975-ARTS. A full Festival registration of six pre-professional classes and all professional artist packages include a ticket for Bridgman Packer Dance.

The Birmingham Dance Showcase is a FREE community showcase presented on January 19 at 12:30 p.m. in the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center Theatre. The performance is a part of Dance Across Birmingham: A Community Celebration, featuring a day of free community dance classes for the entire family, held at the BJCC in the North Meeting rooms from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The concluding performance of the Alabama Dance Festival is the Alabama Dance Showcase on January 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center Theatre. The showcase features dance companies in all genres from across the state. Experience the breadth and diversity of Alabama’s dance community! Tickets are $15 for general admission and $8 for students, and can be purchased through the Alys Stephens Center Box Office at 205-975-ARTS. A full Festival registration of six pre-professional classes and selected artist packages include a ticket for the Alabama Dance Showcase.

PRE-PROFESSIONAL CLASS SELECTION AND REGISTRATION

 
PRE-PROFESSIONAL CLASS SELECTION: Pre-professional master classes are divided into four tracks. TRACK BLUE classes are for ages 11-12, TRACK GREEN for ages 13-14, and TRACK RED for ages 15 and up. Thr fourth track is the Broadway Dance Intensive, TRACK ORANGE A for ages 11-14, and TRACK ORANGE B for ages 15 and up. Students may combine the Orange Track with other tracks. Each track is in a different location (see Festival Locations below).

There are four class sessions on Saturday, January 19, and two class sessions on Sunday, January 20. A full Festival registration includes six classes, lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and performance tickets to Bridgman Packer Dance and the Alabama Dance Showcase. Single class registrations are accepted on a space available basis only and do not include lunches or performance tickets. PRE-PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION FEES: ALABAMA DANCE COUNCIL MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR DISCOUNTED REGISTRATION FEES. To verify your membership status, contact Wesley Taylor. Membership forms can be downloaded from our Membership page. If you are not a current member, you can pay your membership dues with your registration. Additional discounts are available for "Early Early-Bird Registrations" received by November 2 or "Early-Bird Registrations" received by December 19. AFTER DECEMBER 19, ALL REGISTRATIONS WILL BE CHARGED AN ADDITIONAL $25 AND REGISTRANTS ARE NOT GUARANTEED A BRIDGMAN PACKER TICKET.

Registration by mail, fax or online will continue until Friday, January 11. Online registration is now closed. After January 11, registration will be on site at the Alys Stephens Center's Odess Theatre on January 17 from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., and on January 18 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. On-site registration will also be available at Festival class locations on January 19 and 20.

PROFESSIONAL ARTIST WORKSHOP SELECTION AND REGISTRATION

 
PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOP SELECTION: The PURPLE TRACK includes all professional artist workshops for ages 18 and up. There are a total of eight workshops available - five workshops are multidisciplinary, two workshops are dance-specific, and one workshop is for jazz musicians. The Choreography Intensive involves a special application process. See Professional Workshop Descriptions on the Classes page for more details. Professional artists may register for single workshops or select from the available artist packages. Lunch is provided on Friday and Saturday only if a registrant is attending a full day of workshops and/or master classes. Sunday lunch is provided only if a registrant is attending morning workshops and/or master classes and the Alabama Dance Showcase.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR FESTIVAL REGISTRATION

 
Financial assistance is available for registration fees (not housing) for the 2008 Alabama Dance Festival. Application forms can be downloaded from the Festival Forms page. Participants may qualify for one of the following categories (PLEASE NOTE APPLICATION DEADLINES):

Dance Studio Scholarships - Each studio or dance school with 10 paying dancers who are registered for a complete track (not single classes or workshops) receive one FREE Festival registration. THE DANCE STUDIO DIRECTOR MUST SUBMIT THE LIST OF THESE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS TO THE ALABAMA DANCE COUNCIL BY DECEMBER 19.

Financial Need Scholarships -  Participants registering for a complete Festival track (not single classes or workshops) may apply for a scholarship based on financial need. Applicants must submit a signed letter of justification. Applicants under 18 must have their letter signed by a parent and his/her dance teacher. The Festival Scholarship Application Form must be submitted with your Festival Registration Form. THE DEADLINE TO RECEIVE FINANCIAL NEED SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS IS NOVEMBER 30. Applicants will be notified by December 19 about scholarship awards.

Alabama Dance Festival Ambassadors (NEW!) - The Alabama Dance Festival seeks highly motivated student and professional artists or parents of dance students to help spread the word about our fabulous event! Ambassadors receive "credits" for public relations and administrative volunteer work completed on behalf of the Alabama Dance Festival, and may earn up to a 30% DISCOUNT on their Festival registration fees (or their child's registration fees). SPECIAL CALL TO PARENTS: Earn a FREE parent registration AND student registration for your child by applying to be a CHIEF AMBASSADOR! You will work with the Alabama Dance Council staff to recruit dance students from your child's dance studio to attend the Festival and also serve as a volunteer worker during the Festival weekend.

Applicants must be at least 15 years old and students under 18 must have a parent signature on the application form. APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY OCTOBER 15. Ambassadors will be selected and notified by October 19. The Ambassadors are expected to begin their assigned duties in October and continue through the Festival.

THE ALABAMA DANCE EXCHANGE (FESTIVAL EXHIBIT HALL)

 
The Alabama Dance Exchange will be a highlight for this year's Festival! Guaranteed to be a high-traffic area, the Dance Exchange will be located in the lobby of the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center Theatre where the Birmingham Dance Showcase takes place on Saturday and the Alabama Dance Showcase takes place on Sunday.

Expanded and improved, the Dance Exchange will include exhibits by dance companies, dance studios, artists, arts organizations, vendors, and much more! Exhibit tables are available for $50 on a first come first served basis. Companies performing on the Alabama Dance Showcase or Birmingham Dance Showcase receive a complimentary table. SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION OPPORTUNITIES

 
The Festival offers two scholarship audition classes (ages 12-14 and ages 15-up) for summer intensives, workshops or festivals. Possible scholarships include both in-state and out-of-state opportunities! Auditions are scheduled for Saturday morning, January 19, at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. STUDENTS MUST BE REGISTERED FOR A COMPLETE TRACK (SIX CLASSES) TO REGISTER FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION CLASSES. No on-site registrations are permitted. The Sholarship Recommendation Form must be submitted with the student's Registration Form, and can be downloaded from our Festival Forms page.

THE AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE SUMMER INTENSIVE AUDITIONS will take place at the Alabama School of Fine Arts on January 19 from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. (ages 12-14) and 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (ages 15 through college). Festival participants may select the ABT audition as one of their classes, but it is not a requirement to register for the Festival in order to participate in the ABT auditions. FESTIVAL HOUSING

 

The Festival hotel is the newly renovated historic Tutwiler Hotel. A block of rooms is reserved for the Alabama Dance Festival with a special room rate of $119 per night for singles or doubles (up to 4 people) plus 14% occupancy tax. The room rate includes continental breakfast. Valet parking is available for $10 per day (discounted rate). Free parking is available on the street during evening and weekend hours. RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY 12:00 P.M. (NOON) ON DECEMBER 26 TO GUARANTEE THE FESTIVAL RATE. BE SURE TO LET THE HOTEL KNOW THAT YOU ARE ATTENDING THE ALABAMA DANCE FESTIVAL WHEN YOU CALL TO MAKE RESERVATIONS.
