Birmingham, AL - The Alabama Dance
Summit is Alabama’s premiere dance event. Presented by the
Alabama Dance Council each January, the Summit is a time of
study, exploration, exchange and personal renewal for the
state’s broad fellowship of dance students, teachers, and
performers. Teachers, speakers, classes, workshops, auditions,
and performance opportunities are chosen to inspire and inform
everyone in Alabama’s dance community.
From the dance enthusiast or novice to the professional dancer
or teacher - there is something for everyone!

Registration fees range from $40 for a single class to $160 for

OUTSTANDING FACULTY
The Summit faculty includes nationally renowned master teachers
and arts educators: Joan Myers Brown, Executive/Artistic
Director of the Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) and
company members; New York choreographer Thaddeus Davis; Gene
Medler,Artistic Director of the NC Youth Tap Ensemble; Michelle
Dorrance, member of Savion Glover’s company Ti Dii; and Celeste
Miller, choreographer and teaching artist. The world dance
faculty includes Sara Alvarez and Roswell Pfister (Tango), Laura
Garrigues (Sevillanas), and two African dance teachers: Solomon
Sholanke and LaVondia Bryant Square. |

Tatiana
Ledovskikh of the Alabama Ballet and Diana Green are teaching
classes for Track 1.Faculty members for the community classes
include David Anderson, Vicki Butler and Lisa Altamirano.
DANCE CLASSES
Track 1 (ages 8-11), Track 2 (ages 12-14), and Track 3 (ages 15
and up) have a curriculum of six dance classes: two world dance
classes or audition classes, a contemporary ballet class, a
modern class, a choreography or improvisationclass, and a jazz
class. NEW: Track 6 is a oneday track featuring 4 different tap
classes for the intermediate to advanced tapper: technique,
improvisation, traditional steps, and a combination class.
Students in Tracks 2 or 3 may request to substitute a tap class
on a space available basis. |

PERFORMANCES
The full three-day conference registration fee (Tracks 1 through
5) includes a ticket for each of the four performances: the
guest resident company, the Philadelphia Dance Company or
PHILADANCO (Friday or Saturday), dance educator Celeste Miller
in How I Became God in Social Studies (Friday only
prior to PHILADANCO), and two Alabama Dance Showcases (Sunday).
The one-day track of tap classes (Track 6) and single class
registrations do not
include tickets. However, tickets may be ordered on the
Registration Form.The
Alabama Dance Show cases feature Southern Danceworks, the
Alabama School of Fine Arts, Children's Dance Foundation,
Nathifa Dance Company, Natasha Russo Dance Arts, Natyananda -
Dance of India and Sentir Flamenco (all from Birmingham);
Huntsville Ballet Company; Willingham Ballet Company (Cullman);
Auburn Ballet; Andalusia Ballet; Mobile Ballet; AL Contemporary
Dance Company (Mobile); Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre
(Tuscaloosa); Alabama Dance Theatre (Montgomery); and Southeast
Alabama Dance Company (Dothan). |

NEW: Community classes combining yoga,
Pilates, Tai Chi with current exercise science and a workshop on injury
prevention. REPERTORY CLASSES
The Repertory Track (Track 4) allows more
advanced ballet and modern students ages 15-up
to learn specific ballet or modern repertory, culminating in a
performance at the Alabama Showcase on Sunday. This year, PHILADANCO
will teach an excerpt from their contemporary repertoire for the modern
repertory class, and Roger Van Fleteren of the Alabama Ballet will teach
the ballet repertory class. Students are selected based on their
teacher's recommendation, with a limit of two per studio or school. Up
to two alternates may also be recommended.
